31 - Greenland Swamp
27 November 1782
Mr. Gilliard, a Loyalist from Charleston, owned a slave named Harry. The British used Harry to spy on the Patriot militia movements around Charlestown. Harry was sent to Monck’s Corner to collect information on Gen. Francis Marion’s movements and intentions. Learning of Harry’s intentions, a Patriot militia captured Harry and cut off his head. Harry’s head was put on a pole to be a warning to others not to be a British informant.
