South Carolina Patriot militia Capt. John Carter of Col. Leroy Hammond’s regiment led his Horse Company to Dean Swamp to attack Capt. Tenison Cheshire’s twenty-five Loyalists. Capt. Cheshire’s Loyalists were a part of Col. Hezekiah Williams’ South Carolina Loyalist militia. The Loyalists were able to ambush Carter’s troops, resulting in the death of several. Despite the Loyalist’s ambush, the Patriots were able to rally and drive the Loyalists into the swamp.
